Then a notification on Alexander's phone exposes that Blake sent him to dump her. Lily confronts the stranger across the table.
As a child of seven, Lily suffered seizures whenever she saw a person's face. After she passed out near a mall poster, her parents sought a hypnotist. Six months of therapy altered her perception, turning human heads into rubber chickens.
Three months ago, Lily told Blake Collins about her condition after dating online for a year. Blake agreed to wear the green shirt Lily bought for him so she could identify him at their upcoming cafe date.
Alexander Sterling enters the cafe at ten sharp wearing the green shirt. Lily rises from her seat and leans close to him, astonished by his actual human face. When an apron-wearing waiter approaches, Lily sees only another rubber chicken.
Alexander's phone buzzes on the table with incoming messages from Blake. The texts mock Lily's condition and include an unflattering picture, asking Alexander to handle the breakup for him. Lily reads the screen and questions the stranger.
“Are you... Lily?”
“Don't move. I need to confirm something.”
“You're not Blake.”
“No.”
