Adrian claims she runs away whenever they argue. When Nora mentions his midnight visits, Adrian tells her never to return if she dislikes the arrangement. Nora exits into the hall, narrating that she never saw Adrian alive again.
Adrian questions why Nora chooses to battle an ill woman. Nora confronts him directly. She points out that people expect her to surrender everything simply because she is healthy. Adrian claims she makes their situation needlessly complicated during their bedroom discussion.
Nora pulls small luggage from their closet for a scheduled business trip. Adrian claims she flees during every dispute. Nora asks if she should instead watch him sit beside another woman at midnight. Adrian snaps at her to stop being ridiculous.
Adrian tells Nora to stay away permanently if she cannot tolerate the circumstances. Nora steps through the doorway without turning around. The apartment door closes behind her. Her voiceover states that this departure marked the final time she saw Adrian Mercer alive.
“Nora, do you really have to fight a sick woman right now?”
“She's sick, so she gets everything. I'm not sick, so I'm supposed to give up everything.”
“If you really can't stand it this much, then don't come back.”
“That was the last time I saw Adrian Mercer alive.”
Adrian delivers a harsh ultimatum, and Nora walks out into the hallway as the apartment door shuts behind her. Nora's voiceover confirms she never saw her husband alive after this moment. Will Adrian ever realize the finality of their parting words, or is he completely unaware of the tragedy awaiting Nora on her trip?
