The woman in gold dress insults Catherine, calling her a mere stable worker. Catherine asks Rella if she likes Liam Mercer. Rella admits she feels unworthy of him. Catherine tells her daughter not to worry about status and calls Liam loudly. A man in black jacket and the woman in gold mock them. Liam walks over, bypasses Rella, kisses Catherine on the cheek, and greets her with deep respect as Mrs. Lane.
The woman in gold dress calls Catherine a stable worker who does not belong among New York tycoons. Catherine asks Rella if she likes Liam. Rella feels inferior about their social standing. Catherine tells Rella not to worry and to pursue Liam.
The woman in gold dress sneers that Rella knows her place better than Catherine does. Catherine responds that true love ignores background. After the man in black jacket goads her, Catherine raises her voice and calls Liam's name directly.
Rella grabs Catherine's arm in panic. She warns the woman in gold dress and the man in black jacket to keep their hands off her mother. Nearby guests whisper among themselves about Catherine boldly calling out Liam Mercer's first name.
Liam Mercer approaches with a smile. Rella quickly attempts to apologize to him. Liam walks past her, kisses Catherine on the cheek, and speaks to her respectfully as Mrs. Lane. The guests in the room look on in shock.
“Rella, don't worry about status. You have me. Go after him.”
“Touch my mother again and see what happens. I'm done being nice to you two!”
“Mrs. Lane! It is such an honor to have you at our family's charity gala.”
Liam Mercer ignores the insults circulating in the room and treats Catherine Lane like royalty. He kisses her cheek and thanks her for attending his family's event. The woman in gold dress, her companion, and Rella stand frozen in shock. How will the gala guests react once they realize who Catherine actually is?
