Hazel walks in the rain and sees floating numbers that count down her remaining days with each person. Most people show one day, while Jasper shows 31,441. A flashback shows them playing together as kids. Now, Jasper calls her clingy and offers to set her up with his roommate. He shows Hazel a photo on his phone. Hazel sees an enormous number over the roommate and agrees, making Jasper's number plunge.
Hazel walks on the sidewalk in the rain. She sees floating numbers above people indicating days left together. Strangers show a count of one day. Her childhood friend Jasper displays a massive number of 31,441 days above his head.
In a childhood flashback, young Hazel and young Jasper sit in a living room. They draw and play games together. Hazel remembers making a mate playbook for him during those early years growing up side by side.
Under an umbrella on the sidewalk, Jasper tells Hazel that she clings to him too much. He pulls out his phone to show a picture of his dark-haired roommate and suggests setting her up on a date with him.
Hazel notices an enormous floating number above the roommate's picture. She agrees to meet him. Jasper panics, turns off his phone screen, and watches his own floating day count begin to rapidly drop right in front of her.
“Hazel, quit making up stories about these weird numbers. Nobody wants a stage-five clinger.”
“Fine, set us up then.”
“My phone just died. Let's do this later.”
Jasper turns pale after Hazel agrees to the blind date. He shuts off his phone, claiming that the battery died, and puts it away. Meanwhile, the number of days floating over Jasper's head starts to plummet fast. Will Jasper admit how he feels, or will Hazel turn her focus to Jasper's roommate?
