Sophie tells Mara not to take Kieran's cold attitude personally because he acts rude to everyone. Mara remembers Kieran walking past her after his shower with a stern nod, contrasting with the clingy boy who messaged her constantly online. Sophie explains that Kieran only dated one girl online, who suddenly blocked him. Mara unpacks her suitcase and finds Kieran sitting just on the other side of her bedroom wall.
Sophie figures out on her own why Mara knows Kieran's name, guessing she mentioned it earlier. She comforts Mara in the living room and explains that Kieran acts cold and dismissive toward everyone in his life.
Mara thinks back to an hour earlier when she first walked through the front door. Kieran came down the stairs fresh from a shower, wore a stern expression, gave her a brief nod, and walked straight past her.
Mara thinks back to their time dating online. On her screen, Kieran was affectionate, clingy, and messaged her at every hour of the day. In person, his behavior is completely the opposite of that warm online boyfriend.
Mara asks Sophie how many girlfriends Kieran has had. Sophie reveals he only loved one girl from the internet. When that girl blocked him without warning, Kieran spent months desperately searching for any sign of her.
Mara rolls her suitcase into her new guest bedroom. She sits down on the edge of the mattress with her phone. On the other side of the wall, Kieran sits on his own bed and stares down at his device.
“Don't worry about him. He isn't mad at you. He's equally rude to everyone.”
“How many girlfriends has your brother had?”
“One. The online girl. He was crazy about her. Then she dumped him without warning and disappeared. He spent months trying to find her.”
Mara sits on her bed with her phone and realizes Kieran is sitting right next door through the shared wall. She now shares a home with the ex-boyfriend who spent months looking for her. Will Kieran figure out that the guest in his house is Maya Lane?
