Outside the bakery, Cynthia asks Richard whether marriage gives her children. A baron taps her shoulder, so she walks him into an alleyway. Richard assumes she wants to pursue a noble. In the alley, the baron urges Cynthia to be his mistress. Cynthia refuses, mentions giving his gifts to his wife, and kicks his groin. She returns, and Richard agrees to marry her.
Cynthia asks Richard if marriage means she will have children. A baron taps Cynthia's shoulder to bother her. She leads him away to settle the matter. Richard watches them depart and thinks she is pursuing a wealthy noble.
In the alley, the baron speaks sweetly to persuade Cynthia to become his mistress. She refuses outright. After revealing she handed all his presents to his wife, Cynthia kicks him in his groin and drives him away.

“I'll marry you. But understand this first. I'm ordinary, and I have no money. Think carefully.”
