Hannah remembers returning to the Hart household after foster care, where she is ignored while Grace receives all the family's love. At a New Year banquet, Grace trips and spills hot soup on Hannah's hands while scraping her knee. Samuel immediately slaps Hannah, and Michael scolds her. A doctor announces Grace may never dance again. After Hannah kneels for three days, Samuel orders her banished to Africa for five years.
Hannah reflects on being brought back to her biological family from foster care six years ago. The Hart family treats her as an outsider. Everyone in the household and on the military base pours all their affection onto the adopted daughter, Grace.
Hannah remembers Samuel looking at her with disgust when they first met. Her family ignores her for years at home. Later, she overhears her fiancé, Michael, publicly dismissing their childhood engagement to speak warmly about Grace instead.
During a New Year dinner, Grace trips and spills scalding soup directly onto Hannah's hands, scraping her knee in the process. Samuel charges forward and slaps Hannah across the face. Michael confronts Hannah and harshly scolds her for the fall.
Inside Grace's bedroom, a military doctor inspects her injured leg. He tells Samuel, the father, and the mother that Grace has potential permanent damage. The doctor warns them that Grace might never be able to dance again.
Hannah is forced to kneel inside the study for three days. Samuel walks in holding an official document. He tells Hannah that she is being sent to Africa for five years to work on a Peace Corps agricultural project.
“Her? She's supposed to be a Hart?”
“Grace has always been afraid of pain. Did you even think about what you were doing?”
“There's a Peace Corps agricultural project in Africa. They need people. You'll go for five years. Learn some decency and then maybe you can come back.”
Samuel hands down Hannah's sentence in the study, informing her that she must spend five years in Africa on an agricultural project. Hannah breaks down in tears over her brother's harsh judgment.
