Captain Drake Coulter tells Naomi Chen that he and Elena Voss woke up early to recover their physical strength. Naomi keeps quiet about her doubts and asks Elena to lead her to the lab. Out in the corridor, Naomi examines Elena's smooth hands, noticing no calluses or scars from fieldwork. When questioned, Elena admits she has been awake for three weeks and confirms that teammates Lee and Tashi remain asleep in cryosleep.
Drake states that he and Elena woke up ahead of schedule so their bodies could fully recover. Naomi listens carefully and memorizes his explanation without arguing. She then turns to Elena Voss and asks her to lead the way.
Naomi follows Elena down the corridor and studies Elena's hands. She spots no calluses or scars from ten years of field geology. Naomi asks about the crew, and Elena confirms that biology teammates Lee and Tashi are still frozen in cryosleep.
“We woke up a few weeks ahead of schedule, so we fully recovered.”
“How long have you been awake Elena?”
“Around three weeks. Drake had me go over the geological protocol for the colony planet first.”
“They're still in hibernation. Drake said just the two of us need to get things ready for now.”
Elena tells Naomi that only the two of them were brought out of cryosleep to prepare the ship. Lee and Tashi remain asleep in their pods. Naomi walks in silence, having already spotted Elena's spotless hands. Why did Drake wake only Naomi while keeping the rest of the science team frozen?
