Episode: 4
Covered in coffee, Ella takes off her glasses in the hallway and asks Lisa why she is doing this. Lisa claims Ella looked down on her during college. Lisa orders Ella to quit, but Ella refuses. At home that night, Ella inspects company records on her computer. She discovers that Lisa embezzled over one million dollars and accepted kickbacks. Ella remembers their college vow before placing their framed picture facedown.
Ella removes her glasses and asks Lisa how she could betray their friendship. Lisa snaps that Ella acted morally superior in college. Colleagues in pink and a suit laugh along. Ella refuses to resign, so Lisa promises harsh consequences.
In her study, Ella nurses her injured hand while searching through Lisa Madison's workplace records. She finds 1.03 million dollars in inflated project expenses, 570,000 dollars in kickbacks, and private vacations billed to the firm. Ella picks up their old photograph.
A memory returns of Lisa crying in an alley during college. Ella protects her from trouble and calms her down. Lisa begs to stay best friends for life. Ella holds her hand and promises they will, provided Lisa never changes her heart.
Ella stares at the college photo in her study. She watches how much Lisa has transformed since their school days. With a cold expression, Ella places the picture frame facedown against the desk, deciding to end their bond completely.
“What are you doing Lisa? Aren't we best friends?”
“You handed me food like I was a beggar, feeding your own insufferable moral superiority.”
“Now I'm an executive at Harrington Group, and you're a new hire who hasn't even passed probation.”
“Best friends. Not anymore.”
Ella places the framed picture of herself and Lisa facedown on her desk, bringing their long friendship to a cold finish. She now holds hard evidence of Lisa's widespread corruption and stolen company funds. How far will Lisa and her coworkers go to force Ella out before she can turn over her findings?
