Audrey reports for her new executive assistant job and discovers her boss is Caleb, her contractual husband. A year earlier, she married him to ease her sick grandmother Lily's mind before he flew to Europe. Now, Audrey plans to divorce him next week. Caleb's uncle Richard Hawthorne interrupts and demands Audrey attend tomorrow's board meeting to prove their marriage is real. Instead, Audrey quits on the spot and leaves.
Audrey walks into the executive suite ready to begin work as the new assistant. She stops cold when she sees Caleb sitting behind the desk. She realizes her new boss is the husband she agreed to marry for one year.
In a flashback, Audrey sits beside Lily in a hospital room. Lily asks Audrey to marry Rose's grandson for a single year so she can rest easy. Audrey cries as she gives her grandmother her word and accepts the arrangement.
Right after the wedding, Caleb stands outside the courthouse and gives Audrey a credit card. He explains the marriage fulfills his grandfather's trust fund requirements. He leaves for Europe for twelve months, while Audrey promises never to touch his money.
Audrey tells Caleb their year is nearly finished and promises to file for divorce next Monday. Richard Hawthorne storms inside. He reminds Caleb that the trust demands a genuine marriage, ordering him to present Audrey to the board tomorrow morning.
Once Richard exits, Audrey tells Caleb she will not participate in his family conflict. She unclips her company badge, places it down, and announces that she is quitting immediately. Caleb watches in silence as she turns and walks out.
“So you hired me as your assistant just to keep this marriage charade going?”
“I'm only marrying you to meet the conditions for inheriting my grandfather's trust fund. Once the year is up, we can both walk away.”
“Don't forget, the condition for inheriting your grandfather's trust fund is crystal clear. You need a stable, genuine marriage.”
“I'm filing for divorce next week, and I'm quitting as your assistant.”
Audrey takes off her employee badge, announces her immediate resignation, and walks out of the office to protect herself from the Hawthorne family drama. With Richard demanding she appear at tomorrow's crucial board meeting to validate the inheritance, will Caleb find a way to convince Audrey to return and play the role of his devoted wife?
