Dahlia learns Jax has only minor injuries, but she bribes and threatens the healer to lie. The healer tells Rhys that Jax needs royal scales to survive. Rhys decides to take scales from Milo to spare his family from execution. Dahlia sends a guard to bring Tina from her cell. When Rhys prepares to strip Milo's scales, Tina runs into the bedroom and tears off her own scales instead.
The healer reports that Jax has only minor wounds from his fall. Dahlia ignores the truth. She threatens to gut the healer and offers him wealth to claim Jax is dying and needs Milo's scales to live.
Dahlia and the bribed healer tell Rhys that Jax will die without royal scales. Rhys believes the deception. To save Tina and Milo from facing execution for kin-slaying, Rhys resolves to remove scales from his own son.
Dahlia sneaks out into the palace corridor and stops a palace guard. She commands him to bring Tina up from confinement immediately. Dahlia arranges for Tina to witness Rhys strip the scales from Milo's body.
Rhys asks Milo to surrender his scales to free Tina, and Milo shifts into merman form. Rhys takes up pliers. Tina suddenly rushes inside the chamber and strips off her own scales in agony to protect her child.
“Play along and I'll make you rich and powerful. Refuse and I'll gut you right now and hang you out to dry.”
“If it means mom comes home, I'm not scared.”
“No! Take mine! Take mine instead! Don't you dare touch my child!”
Tina screams out in agony as she forcibly tears scales from her own body with her bare hands. Milo weeps in terror at the sight of his bleeding mother, while Rhys stands stunned with pliers in hand. Will Tina survive this self-inflicted mutilation, and will Rhys finally realize Dahlia deceived him?
