Guards cast Evelyn Vale into the mud while Adrian Mercer walks away. Evelyn drags herself across the snow in Grayhaven Neutral Zone and finds a recruitment notice for a stepmother. She heads to the Black Ridge Pack gates for sanctuary. Housekeeper Martha lets her inside with a sharp warning. In the dining room, Alpha Rowan Hale cannot get his son Noah to eat. Rowan gives Evelyn a test to feed the boy.
Guards shove an injured Evelyn Vale into the pouring rain and mud outside the mansion. Her ex-husband, Adrian Mercer, turns his back and walks indoors without looking back at her. Evelyn struggles alone on the wet ground.
Evelyn drags her injured body through heavy snow in the Grayhaven Neutral Zone. She collapses into the drifts. Then she spots a poster asking for a stepmother for a four-year-old pup, offering absolute pack safety to whoever takes the job.
Evelyn walks up to the heavy iron gates and knocks. She discovers that the refuge she picked belongs to Black Ridge Pack. Everyone in the North fears this territory, but she stays at the entrance hoping for shelter anyway.
Housekeeper Martha guides Evelyn down the mansion corridors. Martha tells her plainly that the position does not make her a Luna. She orders Evelyn to remember her station and stay away from any attempts to seduce Alpha Rowan Hale.
Evelyn enters the dining room. Alpha Rowan Hale tries to coax his four-year-old son Noah to drink a bowl of soup, but the pup hides beneath the table. Rowan turns to Evelyn and demands she feed the boy immediately.
“We're hiring a stepmother, not choosing a Luna.”
“Don't worry. I'm just here for the protection.”
“Make him drink this before it gets cold. Do that, and you stay. Fail, and you get out of Black Ridge territory immediately.”
Rowan hands Evelyn the hot soup and sets a harsh deadline. She must get Noah out from under the table and finish the bowl before the food turns cold, or she faces immediate banishment from the pack lands. Can Evelyn win over the frightened pup and secure her safety?
