Episode: 2
In a flashback, Emma steals snacks and money, but the lie detector shocks Stella instead. Back in the present, Mom and Emma leave to watch New Year's Eve fireworks. Emma sticks her tongue out at Stella, who lies collapsed on the entryway floor. After Mom locks the front door, Stella crawls to her desk in agony. She writes a farewell letter to Mom. Her physical pain stops when her spirit leaves her dead body.
A memory shows Emma stealing snacks and cash from the house. When Emma denies it, the detector flashes green. Stella says she did not take anything either, but the device flashes red and shocks her with electricity.
Mom leads Emma outside to see the New Year fireworks display. Stella lies on the floor by the entryway. Before heading out into the night, Emma sticks her tongue out and mocks her sister lying on the ground.
The front door locks from the outside. Stella curls on the living room floor as sharp stomach cramps hit her. Because the device by her ear blinks red, she tries to convince herself that she is not actually sick.
Stella crawls across the floor to her bedroom desk. In the past, she had to write lines saying she was a liar. Now, she writes a final note begging Mom to believe her just once before her strength fades away.
The sharp pain suddenly stops. Stella watches her spirit float upward away from her flesh. She looks down at her motionless body slumped over the wooden desk. The ear device continues to blink red, and she realizes she has died.
“Wasn't me”
“Bye, sis. We're going to see the pretty fireworks”
“Mom, I really love you. It hurts so much. Mom, why won't you believe me? Please believe me just this once.”
“I understood then. I had died. And I still hadn't learned to be honest. I'm sorry, Mom.”
Stella's spirit floats above the bedroom floor, staring down at her own lifeless body slumped over the desk. The red detector light on her ear keeps blinking in the empty room. How will Mom react when she returns from the fireworks and finds the note Stella left behind on the desk?
