An abandoned infant named Avery arrives at the Night Howlers outpost in Greyhaven. Alpha Roman and ninety-eight other rogue wolves adopt her after she speaks to him. Years pass, and Avery hides her family's outlaw status at Blackmoon High. Classmate Vivian Crowe torments her until Avery snaps, pulling Vivian through a window. Avery wakes in the infirmary to violent demands from Victor Crowe.
A five-day-old infant arrives at the Night Howlers outpost in Greyhaven. The baby babbles the word Papa to Alpha Roman. Instead of turning her away, Roman and ninety-eight other rogue wolves choose to raise the child together.
Avery grows up and enrolls at Blackmoon High as a regular student. She conceals her ninety-nine rogue fathers from everyone for over ten years. Avery wants to shield her fathers from being captured or hunted by the Wolf Council.
Vivian Crowe and her clique corner Avery around the lockers and hallway, insulting and physically harassing her. Avery's wolf instincts break free. Avery grabs Vivian and drags the bully straight out through a third-floor window to the ground.
Avery regains consciousness in the school infirmary while Ms. Pierce yells at her. Avery asks whether Ms. Pierce truly wants her guardians summoned. Victor Crowe steps forward, violently hits Avery, and orders her family to arrive, kneel, and pay.
“Should we... keep her?”
“You think a packless charity case belongs at Blackmoon High?”
“Ms. Pierce, are you sure you want me to call my guardians?”
“Get your guardians here right now to kneel, apologize, and pay for this!”
Avery lies bleeding across the infirmary floor, holding back her wolf to keep her rogue family hidden. Victor Crowe and Ms. Pierce stand over her, ordering her to summon her guardians to pay and bow before them.
