Early in the morning, Clara Hayes puts her packed suitcases aside and sets fire to eight years of relationship souvenirs in the yard's furnace. Silas Bennett dashes over and burns his hands trying to rescue the charred box. He denies any infidelity with Elena. Clara refuses to listen, remembering his emotional neglect, and presents her New York flight ticket. Silas mistakenly thinks her journey is temporary.
Clara Hayes places a cardboard box filled with eight years of shared items into the outdoor fire pit and strikes a match. Silas Bennett sprints home in panic, thrusting his bare hands into the flames to pull out the burning pieces.
Silas claims his bond with Elena never crossed any boundaries. Clara weeps while recalling when he turned his back on her to capture snowy photos for Elena, along with the afternoon he handed Elena a stuffed toy at an amusement park.
Clara silences Silas by displaying her booked flight confirmation to New York. Believing she is traveling for work, Silas promises to set a fresh wedding date upon her return. Clara grips her bags and turns away without a second glance.
“Why did you burn them? You loved them!”
“I used to. Not anymore.”
“Clara you're doing all this because you want an explanation. Fine. Everything Elena and I had were just friends. You think we cheated on you, but we never crossed the line.”
“What if I don't come back?”
Silas believes Clara is only boarding a plane to New York for work duties. He promises to arrange another wedding date as soon as she lands back home. Clara picks up her bags and asks what happens if she never returns, freezing him on the spot. Will Silas finally realize Clara is gone forever?
