In her room, Kara Vale examines the mysterious black box she collected as rent. While a mushroom creature sneaks into her bag, a woman on a video call instructs her to set chalk boundaries. Kara uses a wooden clip on the cube, creating a spark. After she empties her bag, a brass key stands upright by itself. Kara puts the box away and writes notes while the key points toward the door.
A black cube rests on Kara's wooden table. On the floor below, a tiny mushroom creature with bird-like legs creeps across the room. It scurries upward and sneaks quietly into Kara's open messenger bag without her noticing.
Kara reaches out her hand to touch the black box. On her phone, the woman on video call warns her to establish boundaries first. Kara takes a piece of chalk and draws lines on the table around the cube.
Kara uses a wooden clip to touch the cube, creating an instant electrical spark. She pulls her hand back safely. She then dumps the contents of her messenger bag out onto the desk, spreading her belongings and a brass key.
Kara remarks that the black box remains completely motionless. The woman on the screen tells her that another object is moving instead. On the wooden tabletop, the brass key suddenly lifts itself up and balances on its tip without assistance.
Kara stores the box and a booklet of door illustrations into a desk drawer. She writes observations into a grimoire, deciding against contacting her mother tonight. Behind her, the upright key spins around to face the closed room door.
“Boundary first.”
“The box isn't moving.”
“Something else is.”
“I'm not sending any of this to mom tonight.”
Kara shuts her desk drawer after locking up the black box and illustration booklet. She records notes in her grimoire, refusing to alert her mother about what happened. Meanwhile, the brass key remains upright and points toward the door. What is the key aiming at, and will the mushroom creature hiding in Kara's bag cause trouble next?
