Episode: 1
Five-year-old Laila fixes food for her sick mother Rosa before heading out to collect bottles. A neighbor boy trips over her bag and lies to his mother about it. Laila foresees a metal pipe falling and yells out, saving the angry woman. Instead of thanking her, the neighbor drags Laila home and discovers Rosa dead inside. At the police station, an officer introduces Laila to her father, Vincent Moretti.
Laila makes a slice of peanut butter bread for her bedridden mother Rosa and tucks her into bed. She grabs an empty trash bag and heads outside into the trailer park to gather discarded plastic bottles for cash.
A neighbor boy trips over Laila's plastic bag and falls directly into the mud. He cries loudly and claims Laila pushed him down. The boy's mother rushes over and screams insults at Laila for hurting her child.
Laila gets a sudden vision of scaffolding collapse and screams a warning. A heavy metal pipe crashes down right where the woman stood. Blaming Laila for causing the accident, the angry woman drags the girl by her hair.
The neighbor pulls Laila into the trailer to complain to Rosa, but sees blood pooled beneath the bed. Rosa lies dead. Convinced that Laila put a curse on her own mother, the terrified woman runs away screaming.
A police officer brings Laila and her mother's ashes to meet Vincent Moretti outside the station. Vincent arrives in a luxury car convoy with Isabella and Mia. The officer tells him he is now Laila's legal guardian.
“That big metal pipe is gonna fall!”
“You damned jinx! You cursed my son!”
“She's dead! That freak cursed her own mother to death!”
“Mr. Moretti, this is your daughter Laila. Her mother, Rosa, committed suicide. You're her legal guardian now.”
Laila stands outside the police station holding the urn with Rosa's picture. She stares up at Vincent Moretti and calls him Daddy while Isabella and Mia watch from the luxury car. Will Vincent embrace the daughter he abandoned, or will he turn his back on her now that her mother is gone?
