Ethan remembers his mother claiming Emma took two million dollars to leave him. On a city sidewalk, Ethan and Vanessa walk right by Emma, her companion, and the twins. Emma tells her companion they belong to separate worlds now. Later, Ethan drinks heavily at a bar and kicks Vanessa out. Emma joins a design firm as lead designer. Ethan reviews her ring sketch, summons her to his office, and turns to face her.
Ethan sits in a hospital room holding an engagement ring. His mother, Mrs. Reed, stands over him. She tells him that Emma took two million dollars and chose to walk away from his life.
Ethan and Vanessa walk past Emma, her male companion, Penny, and Andy without pausing. The companion notes that the twins belong to Ethan. Emma replies that Ethan is married and their lives must never touch again.
Ethan sits at a bar counter and drinks heavily. Vanessa tries to stop him from drinking more. Ethan orders her out and mentions the press. Vanessa stays behind alone, fuming over Emma's sudden reappearance in the city.
Emma arrives at a modern design company office. A staff member introduces her to the entire creative department. Emma smiles and bows as the team welcomes her as their newly hired lead designer.
Ethan sits behind his executive desk while his assistant hands him a fresh design portfolio. Ethan looks closely at a specific ring sketch. He immediately orders his assistant to bring the new hire to his office.
Emma knocks on the door and steps inside to introduce herself to Mr. Reed. Ethan slowly spins his executive chair around to meet her gaze. He addresses Emma by name and remarks on the lost time.
“That woman took two million dollars... took two million to leave you and she... and left.”
“Get out! I gave you and the Harts enough face in the press. Don't test me.”
“Ethan and I are getting married. Why did you come back?”
“Emma, it's been... it's been a while.”
