Traveling by cart, Aveline gives Edmund a jewelry box and invents a story about him selling horses to court nobility. At the banquet, Sir Roland Boyd presents Margaret with twelve acres of land. Aveline arrives holding Edmund's arm and presents him as her husband. Edmund delivers the jewelry and recites the cover story, charming Margaret. Sir Roland then confronts Margaret over her broken promises.
Traveling by donkey cart, Aveline coaches Edmund on their way to the estate. She passes him a jewelry box for her mother. Aveline tells him to claim he is a capital merchant who provides horses to court nobles.
Inside Margaret Carter's courtyard, Sir Roland Boyd produces an agreement for twelve acres of pasture upon marriage. Margaret compliments the suitor on the gift. Roland then questions the host about where Aveline has gone.
Aveline steps into the crowded courtyard holding Edmund by the arm. She presents him to the gathered crowd as her husband. Edmund offers Margaret the jewelry gift and tells the fabricated backstory, gaining her mother's approval.
Sir Roland confronts the host before the party attendees with open fury. He mentions every present he previously gave Margaret. Roland demands to know why she broke her pledge to marry Aveline to him.
“Tell my mother you're from the capital. Your family owns land and supplies horses to nobles.”
“Once we marry, my father will grant you twelve acres of pasture.”
“Mom, this is my husband, Edmund Reed.”
“You took my gifts. You promised to marry Aveline to me!”
Sir Roland refuses to accept Aveline's announcement and confronts Margaret directly in the courtyard. He angrily points to the gifts Margaret accepted and demands that she honor her word. Will Margaret back Roland's marriage claim, or will she accept Edmund as her daughter's husband despite Roland's fierce outrage?
