Roland refuses to back down and confronts Margaret about breaking her word. Aveline defends Edmund before the gathered crowd. She claims her new husband belongs to a distinguished noble family from the capital. Roland laughs at the story. He reveals to the entire courtyard that Aveline and Edmund arrived riding a simple mule instead of a fine carriage. The guests begin to whisper among themselves. Margaret turns on her daughter in shock. She demands that Aveline tell the truth right there about whether this new husband is an outright liar.
