While digging for wild plants, Maria faces harsh insults from two local women who blame her for accurately foreseeing a fatal landslide. Maria offers them healing plants, but the villagers push her away. After finding a four-leaf clover, Maria wishes for food and warm shelter. A fancy carriage loses its way nearby. Ethelyn notices Maria outside. Raymond asks for directions, and Ethelyn catches Maria when the girl trips.
Maria digs for wild greens while singing to herself on the path. Two villager women approach and curse her for predicting a deadly landslide. Maria warns that the elderly woman will fall sick and offers herbs, but the women mock and reject her.
Maria walks toward the dirt road after the women leave. She finds a four-leaf clover in the grass. Maria kneels down and prays to have enough food to eat, warm clothes for winter, and a house with a roof that does not leak.
An ornate carriage halts on the road when Mr. Raymond realizes they are lost on their journey to Avalon. Inside, Bella tends to the frail Ethelyn. Ethelyn looks outside, notices Maria standing in the meadow, and suggests asking the girl for directions.
Bella helps Ethelyn step out of the carriage. Mr. Raymond kneels to ask Maria for directions back to Avalon. Maria stumbles forward on the rough ground. Ethelyn quickly steps in, catching Maria and holding her up, which leaves Bella staring in utter shock.
“Maria, where's your home? You're just a bastard!”
“Grandma is going to fall ill. Maria has some herbs!”
“Little one, do you know the way back to Avalon?”
“Madam, you... you... you... You can carry this child!”
Ethelyn wraps Maria in a warm embrace and holds her securely off the dirt road. Bella stands frozen beside the carriage, unable to believe her chronically ill mistress can lift a child. Will Maria agree to guide the noble travelers back to Avalon, and what caused Ethelyn's sudden burst of physical strength?
