A flashforward opens with Richard chasing a barefoot Lucia into a bedroom. In Spain, loan sharks beat Lucia over her father's medical debts. Lucia spots an au pair flyer and moves to Los Angeles to work for Richard Sterling. Richard and his wife Margaret welcome her. Margaret brings Lucia a blanket and tells her to lock her room. Late that night, Richard opens Lucia's bedroom door and stares inside.
A shirtless Richard Sterling pursues a barefoot Lucia Fernandez down the hallway. He kicks the bedroom door open with force. Lucia cowers against the headboard in terror as he approaches her inside the dark room.
In Spain, a debt collector assaults Lucia beside her sick father. He demands loan repayment by the weekend or her family will suffer. Lucia notices a flyer for an au pair job in Los Angeles and decides to leave.
A car brings Lucia to a massive Los Angeles estate. Richard Sterling greets her with open arms and introduces his wife, Margaret Sterling. Margaret stands beside him with a guarded, uneasy expression while Richard smiles warmly at Lucia.
Lucia settles into her luxurious guest room and smiles at a framed family photo. Margaret Sterling enters to drop off an extra blanket. Before she steps into the hallway, Margaret turns back and tells Lucia to lock her door.
Lucia falls asleep in the quiet guest room. In the middle of the night, the bedroom door pushes open an inch. Richard stands in the gap, staring coldly at her bed. Lucia wakes up and muffles her own scream.
“If you don't pay back the loan you took for this old geezer by the end of the weekend, toda tu familia va sufrir.”
“I'm going to America to raise money for Dad!”
“Supporting talented au pairs has always been my passion!”
“Remember to lock your door.”
Lucia wakes up in the middle of the night to see her bedroom door standing cracked open. Richard Sterling watches her from the dark corridor, and Lucia claps her hand over her mouth in sheer horror. Will Richard step into the room, or will Lucia find a way to keep herself safe from her new host?
