Emily finds Mary weeping outside in the garden. In a flashback, Lily tells Catherine by the pool that Mary gave Emily two apples. Catherine's son backs up the story. Catherine threatens to fire Mary if she offers Emily food or water. The son warns Mary again. Emily comforts the maid. Lily asks Catherine to dismiss Mary entirely while Emily stands alone near the door.
Mary presses a towel to her face and weeps quietly in the garden. Emily walks up to check on her. Emily asks the housekeeper what Catherine said during their private talk. Mary struggles to hold back her tears.
Lily rests on a lounge chair beside Catherine at the pool. Lily informs Catherine that Mary sneaked two apples to Emily. Catherine's son climbs out of the water and confirms the report. Catherine gets angry and regrets keeping Mary employed.
Mary explains Catherine's threat to fire her if she gives Emily a glass of water. Catherine's son approaches and orders Mary to stop helping Emily. Emily steps in, comforts the upset housekeeper, and tells Mary not to worry about her.
Lily stretches out by the pool and asks Catherine to fire Mary immediately. Catherine says she will consider the idea. Near the estate entrance, Emily stands silently and looks back toward the door as she remains cut off from food.
“She said if I come near you again I'm fired. She said I'm not allowed to give you anything. Not even a glass of water.”
“That old woman. I've been too kind to her. I should have fired her years ago.”
“Mom said you're not to help her, you hear me?”
Lily relaxes by the pool and tries to convince Catherine to get rid of Mary once and for all. Catherine agrees to think about it. Meanwhile, Emily stands alone by the door with no food or water. Will Catherine actually throw Mary out, and how long can Emily survive with zero support?
