She admits Lily orchestrated the restaurant note and the scissors incident. Soon after, a young man drives up in a silver sports car. He berates them, threatens Mary's job, and insults Emily. After he leaves, Emily puts on her shoes and vows to return and settle everything.
Mary approaches Emily, who is shivering barefoot on a park bench. Mary wraps a coat around her and hands her a letter. She admits she saw Lily frame Emily with the scissors and restaurant note, apologizing for staying silent.
A wealthy young man pulls up by the curb in a silver sports car. He calls them beggars. He warns Mary that she will lose her job if she talks to Emily again, insults Emily directly, and speeds away.
Emily puts her shoes back on and grips the letter in her hand. She tells Mary to head home safely and not to worry. Emily then firmly states that she will come back to the estate and handle the score.
“I've seen everything Miss Emily. Lily set you up. The restaurant letter, the scissors, everything. But I don't dare to speak up. I'm a coward.”
“Mary, if I see you near her again, you're gone. Pack your bags and get out. Gutter rats belong in the gutter. Don't ever show your face at our gate again.”
“Go back Mary, I'll be fine. I promise you I'll come back, and I'll settle everything.”
Emily stands on the sidewalk with her shoes on, clutching the letter Mary gave her. Even after the young man insults her and speeds away, she refuses to back down.
